Have a lawyer’s telephone number saved before you need one
One of the best forms of protection is preparation.
Do not wait until you are inside a police van or station before trying to find a lawyer.
Every adult should consider having:
- the telephone number of a trusted lawyer;
- the number of a close relative or trusted person;
- emergency contact information stored somewhere accessible;
- relevant medical information available where necessary; and
- copies of important identification documents securely accessible.
If you are arrested, your lawyer or trusted contact can immediately begin asking questions and making arrangements for your representation.
Tell someone immediately
If you are arrested, one of the most useful things your lawyer can do is establish where you are and what happened .
Therefore, where circumstances permit, ensure that someone you trust knows:
- that you have been arrested;
- the police station or location;
- the name or identity of the arresting officers, if known;
- the alleged offence;
- the time of arrest;
- the name of the investigating officer, if available; and
- any immediate medical or safety concerns.
If you are able to make a call, keep it brief and factual.
For example:
“I have been arrested and taken to [police station]. I was arrested at approximately [time]. Please contact my lawyer and inform my family.”
